WASHINGTON, Jan 8 (Reuters) - U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents shot two people in Portland on Thursday afternoon, an ABC News affiliate reported, citing sources, adding the condition of the two people shot was not immediately known.

Two people shot by federal agents in Portland, Oregon, local police and FBI say
Two people are hospitalized after they were shot by federal agents, the Portland Police Bureau said in a statement.
It is not immediately clear what their conditions are. The FBI Portland office said in a post on X that the shooting involved Customs and Border Protection agents and they are leading the investigation.
Today at 2:18 p.m. PT, Portland police officers responded to the 10200 block of Southeast Main Street for a report of a shooting, the release said. Officers confirmed federal agents had been involved in the shooting, they said.
At 2:24 p.m., officers responded to a man and a woman who had been shot near Northeast 146th Avenue and East Burnside, where they were transported to the hospital, the release said. It is not immediately clear why the different locations were reported.
“We are still in the early stages of this incident,” said Chief Bob Day. “We understand the heightened emotion and tension many are feeling in the wake of the shooting in Minneapolis, but I am asking the community to remain calm as we work to learn more.”
CNN has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for further information.

A shooting in Portland, Oregon, involved Border Patrol agents doing a car stop of a married couple, according to a senior law enforcement source. The husband and wife were shot, the source said.
The husband was shot in the arm and the wife was shot in the chest and their condition is currently unknown, the source added.

Agent feared for ‘life and safety’ when he fired in Portland, DHS says
A Department of Homeland Security official said that a federal agent feared for “his life and safety” when he fired today in a shooting that wounded two people in Portland, Oregon.
DHS spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said that Border Patrol agents were conducting a targeted vehicle stop involving a Venezuelan illegal immigrant who she said was affiliated with the transnational Tren de Aragua prostitution ring and was accused in a recent shooting in Portland. The driver was believed to be a member of the Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua, she said.
“When agents identified themselves to the vehicle occupants, the driver weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents,” McLaughlin said in a statement.
“Fearing for his life and safety, an agent fired a defensive shot,” she said. “The driver drove off with the passenger, fleeing the scene. This situation is evolving and more information is forthcoming.”

I used to live a few hours from Portland. I saw bands at small concert halls and bars there. I once sat in an apartment with some hippies and punks smoking hand rolled cigs talking about the Big Bang and whether vampires could be real. Those are some of my favorite memories of young dumb 20s. To see it become an epicenter of white fascist thuggery is really doing things to my brain when I read the news from there.

FBI Portland changes messaging from investigating shooting to assault on agents
The FBI in Portland initially said on X that it was investigating an “agent involved shooting” that injured two people and involved federal agents — but then deleted the post and focused on an alleged assault on agents. [It happened] approximately 2:15pm near the 10000 block of Main St. in Portland involving Customs and Border Patrol Agents in which 2 individuals were wounded.”
Asked about the deleted post, the FBI in Portland sent a revised statement on the incident. The new statement focused on “an assault on federal officers.”
“FBI Portland is investigating an assault on a federal officers that happened at approximately 2:15pm near the 10000 block of Main St. in Portland involving two Customs and Border Patrol agents,” it said.
“The two assailants fled the scene immediately following the shooting and are currently being treated for their injuries,” it said.
The Department of Homeland Security said that Border Patrol agents were conducting a “targeted stop” on a vehicle in which the passenger was a Venezuelan in the country illegally and who allegedly was involved in a recent shooting in Portland.
DHS said that the driver “weaponized his vehicle and attempted to run over the law enforcement agents” and that an agent “fired a defensive shot” and the driver drove off.
Portland police said in a statement that they later found two people, whom it identified only as a male and female, who had been shot.

The FBI in Portland, Oregon, said it is investigating a shooting in the city involving federal agents that injured two people today.
