Apparently it’s “virtue signaling” and “language policing” to not want to use language that actively oppresses people. Very cool.

We are so far away from any meaningful change it hurts.

My favorite:

Oh, I mistook people being anti-ICE for being anti-fascist… turns out they’re only anti-ICE

I guess being anti-ICE and being a Good Person are mutually exclusive of one another. My bad, y’all.

I’m asking genuinely, so please don’t insult me.

What’s wrong with using “meth addict” and “virgin”? I can understand asking people not to use “b——” (the word used for female dogs) for its misogynistic meaning, and “virgin” may carry some meanings I don’t get. But we use “cracker” all the time, and doesn’t that mean “meth addict”?

Cracker does not mean meth addict. It means a White Person.

Being addicted to drugs and being a murderous ICE agent should never be casually linked. Not all drug users or drug addicts are going to be ICE agents and not all ICE agents are going to be drug addicts. Trying to link drug addiction to the actions of a murderous ICE agent does more to excuse the agent’s actions as “not their responsibility”. ICE agents chose to do what they are doing knowing full well what they are expected to be doing.

Being a virgin is not a bad thing. ICE is a bad thing, fascism is a bad thing, being a virgin is not a bad thing. There is no reason to lump “people who have not had sex” together in the same group as fascists who are out kidnapping and murdering people.

Yes but they are mistaken to do so. Being a misogynist is bad and deserves insulting, but being a virgin is not. Using virgin as an insult is only going to friendly fire and make a virgin comrade feel shame

expanding a bit on “virgin” as a prejorative: the idea behind using it is an example of turning “a bullies words against them”. its an easy way to upset the bully, sure. but consider: to use their insults is to in many ways agree with them.

calling a misogynist a “virgin” might sting em if they’re young, but it also affirms to them (and anyone who hears) that sex is a form of male power.

Cracker comes from whip cracker iirc and i dont believe it has anything to do with drug use

The idea that drug addiction is bad and shameful is full on war on drugs propaganda, and the idea that virginity is shameful comes from patriarchal ideas of men “having” to be dominant and sexually active

I’m not from Anglosphere, so forgive and fix me. I heard “crack” means “cocaine”, so I assumed it meant “drug abuser”. I also sometimes saw people using the term “crack pipe theory” to describe right-winger’s over-the-top claims.

It’s typically “crackpot theory” not crackpipe, and one could argue that “crackpot” is at least as harmful as the word “crazy” if you subscribe to the belief that the word “crazy” is ableist.

Both “cracked” and “crazed” share a similar origin in that they initially referred to an item, such as a pot, which was “cracked” or “crazed”, which became a pejorative for someone who is mentally unwell. Both terms have transcended their pejorative statuses and have become colloquial terms used in common conversation.

As another user pointed out, “cracker” refers to a whip-cracker. Crack is also a form of smokeable cocaine, so it’s easy to see how one could make this mistake!

Meth addiction, or substance use disorder of any kind, is a biopsychosocial affliction that shouldn’t be weaponized and used to oppress people. Meth use is largely associated with low income, undereducated, rural people. Its weaponization is inherently classist.

One is punching up. The other is punching down.
