Slop.@hexbear.net•[CW: the most embarrassing liberalism that might actually give you a concussion] People are dying and they still think they can solve this with civil protestEnglish
27·3 days agoThanks, homie. I don’t really enjoy comparing traumas, and see little utility in comparative analysis of trauma, but it sure wasn’t great. My heart hurts hearing that you or anyone else has had their trauma and experience denied — especially when people then take the line of, “well, surely, you must have done something to have deserved such treatment.” Actually, the only thing I did was be born to a poor teenage woman who I’ve never known, who couldn’t afford to care for me, and, well, one thing led to another and there you have it.
Anyways, no person, child or adult, deserves the experiences endured by myself or my cohort in those institutions. It’s really telling that so many people believe there are people — children — deserving of such treatment. Of my cohort, I’m one of the lucky few that are still alive, not in prison, housed, reasonably healthy, and whose material needs are mostly met.

Someone please go back in time and tell baby gnome that I’m fucking dumb and to read more theory.

62·3 days agoI think the issue here really is that most Amerikkkans, libs especially, white libs especially frfr, are unwilling to die for anything. Truly, I believe very few of them would lay down their lives for their own family, either biological or chosen.
Nonviolent protest is very low risk, and thus very low reward. Any other form of protest is too high risk for these people. Most of them have likely never been confronted with their own mortality, and very few have likely been subject to true state violence. Moreover, they, up until very recently, almost refuse to believe state violence exists.
I’ve mentioned before around here that I spent a lot of time in various juvenile institutions. As a young 18/19-somethin’ and off paper for the first time in my life, I got a job in a very white, liberal community and eventually moved there. When I would explain to people there what I experienced as a child and teen they literally COULD NOT BELIEVE my experience, and several accused me of lying or exaggerating. Specifically it was a lot of the older, 40+ crowd that accused me of lying.
I truly believe shit has to get REAL BAD for almost EVERYONE before any real change can happen. And I mean it needs to get life threateningly bad for the majority of the working class. As long as they can go home to relative comfort, we’re all fucked.

badposting@hexbear.net•Enough Italian food hate. It’s easily one of the top 3 European cuisines. Just admit it.English
11·3 days agoI know we’re in badposting but I fucking love food too much to be badposting rn. If we’re only considering Europe then, as an avid mushroom hunter, and thus, mushroom cook, I have to agree. My cooking tends to skew Italian and French, though, many species are often better served with a more Central European flair.
Species such as cantharellus, craterellus, Morchella, and pleurotus typically get a French or Italian treatment in my kitchen, while agaricus, cerioporus, and hydnum often find themselves in more Polish, Czech, or Hungarian dishes. The more versatile (imo) boletus, grifola, and Laetiporus species find themselves all over the continent. Hericium and hypomyces lactiflorum especially, though, get a decidedly New England treatment in my house… mmmm… lobster mushroom roll…
As you can tell, I’m both hungry and love talkin food n fungi.

39·3 days agoThey’ve been railing against MN since… well, when was the last time MN voted red, Nixon? They’ve been railing against Somalis since Ilhan Omar came on the scene (and was the first national politician to really talk shit about Israel). Laura Loomer, Ali Alexander, and Jacob Wohl went to MPLS ca. 2018/19 and made a “documentary” about her which really put MNs Somali population in the national discourse for the first time.

Also, I’m of the mind that the kid was paid to make that video and it was used to manufacture consent for what we’re seeing today.

69·3 days agoIf by YouTube video, you mean the video of George Floyd being murdered by a cop, then yes. That situation was the beginning of the Trump-Walz vendetta. Then Timmy had to go and run for VP which really pissed Donny off. This whole situation is retribution.
Don’t forget, many people in Trump’s inner circle currently are from Minnesota (Hegseth) and the upper Midwest in general (Noem). Easy for Trump to hit ‘em where it hurts.

5·3 days agoIt’s typically “crackpot theory” not crackpipe, and one could argue that “crackpot” is at least as harmful as the word “crazy” if you subscribe to the belief that the word “crazy” is ableist.
Both “cracked” and “crazed” share a similar origin in that they initially referred to an item, such as a pot, which was “cracked” or “crazed”, which became a pejorative for someone who is mentally unwell. Both terms have transcended their pejorative statuses and have become colloquial terms used in common conversation.
As another user pointed out, “cracker” refers to a whip-cracker. Crack is also a form of smokeable cocaine, so it’s easy to see how one could make this mistake!

9·4 days agoMeth addiction, or substance use disorder of any kind, is a biopsychosocial affliction that shouldn’t be weaponized and used to oppress people. Meth use is largely associated with low income, undereducated, rural people. Its weaponization is inherently classist.

chat@hexbear.net•anyone else feel that the phrases 'organize' and 'direct action' are increasingly wielded online without specificity, uniquely neutering themEnglish
0·9 days agoYes. That’s absolutely fair. Just yesterday I commented that, as a rule, I don’t talk about my offline actions/organizing online.
I do think OP is on to something, though. I feel like even pointing people in the direction of Food Not Bombs or telling folks to just look at community bulletin boards (lots of organizing around me still happens by way of physical bulletin boards, posters on light poles, etc.), or even like… “hang out at your local crusty coffee shop and wait for the lefties to show up, and make friends with them” would all be more helpful than “GO DO DIRECT ACTION”.
Lots of people are pretty isolated from leftist ideologies in the real world and their only connection to them may very well be online, and it’s easy to forget that someone asking “What can I do??” Might likely be best served by a gentle nudge in a much more productive direction.
