For this edition of Saturday Anime Night, first up is Yuyu Hakusho (1992), one of the all-time classics of shonen anime, featuring a teenage boy who is killed by a car to save a child and then given superpowers in recognition of his selflessness. He goes back to Earth and fights bad guys. Expect a lot of glowing and powering up to defeat smug villains and the like. Episodes 109 through 112 tonight, finishing up the series. After that, we will watch Yuyu Hakusho: The Movie (1994), the theatrical feature film that does not quite fall into the continuity of the series.

After that is The Three Caballeros (1944), the second animated feature produced by Disney during WW2 to promote relations between the US and South America, following Saludos Amigos (1942). It is usually considered superior to its predecessor. Disney includes it among their Animated Canon, according it the same status as, say, The Lion King (1994) or Bambi (1940). It is pretty much a travelogue of South America, complete with live-action segments, except that Donald Duck and his new South American bird buddies get up to a bunch of silly animated antics along the way. Can Disney bridge the gap between the US and its southern neighbors, or is this just another propaganda tract promoting US hegemony? I guess we’ll find out. As usual for older Disney stuff, this was directed by several people, most of whom worked on Disney’s previous features, such as Snow White (1937) and Pinocchio (1940).
