Season 1 and 2 were alright but nothing spectacular, it was largely carried by the 80s nostalgia vibe and references to nerdy DnD shit tho, if they set it in modern day it would likely flop.

horrendous writing, mostly bad acting, a “plot” that has the main character, and only super powered character be entirely disposed for the entire arc while the rest try to hold off the badguys, only for them to swoop in at the last second and make a mean face till the badguys explode for LITERALLY EVERY SEASON THIS IS THE ARC, filled with zionist crew members, vague slop disguised as nostalgia, with nothing to say and nothing it cares about, bad cgi and an overall forgettable premise.

I mean, yes, but to me the portrayal of the soviets read more like 80’s nostalgia than genuine propaganda (except the one defector dude who was completely mesmerized by american treats, absurd propaganda). The US gov’t is pretty consistently an antagonist throughout the show as well. idk to me the charm of the show is the 80’s vibe, some parts were better than others, but the show wasn’t bad by any means

The US gov’t is pretty consistently an antagonist throughout the show as well.

It is but the show doesn’t really ever fully acknowledge this, here they are torturing kids and poking around eldritch dimensions but none of the main characters ever actually question this, it’s just kind of treated like a fact of life, like “it occasionally rains and snows and also the US government sometimes tortures kids in their secret lairs”, there’s just zero self reflection. At the end of season 5 everyone just kinda moves on with their lives and that’s it.

which was hilarious. the us government is capturing and experimenting on pregnant women, creating a horror dimension that could end the world in the process, but we’re supposed to believe the soviets were bad/wore for having prison camps? also the actions of the us gov’t are excused on the arms-race grounds that the soviets would have done it so we had to beat them to it? just bad

the show was at its best doing 80’s horror and coming-of-age goonies stuff

hahah, that’s fair. the military just up and disappearing at the end of s5 with no followup on their operations in the upside down or capturing/interrogating any of the living children is objectively terrible writing. I much preferred the earlier seasons where things were very mkultra-coded and the us gov’t/brenner were very clearly the bad guys.

for me it was just better-than-usual slop, which has its place. enjoyed the 90’s vibe before it became over-the-top and the DnD stuff, but that’s about it

Eh, I thought season 1 was pretty good. Should have been a miniseries though; horror doesn’t work when you dissect every possible detail of the alien supernatural threat.

Later seasons sucked as horror, and eventually turned into propaganda and it certainly doesn’t help that several cast members are genocidal.

I watched the 1st 30 seconds of it when it came out and people were hyping it up, and then decided I didn’t want to because it seemed scary and I was a chicken.  What makes it terrible?

I heard that one of the main writers divorced his wife just before the last season. I also heard that his wife was basically his ghostwriter.

    lol

I feel like the first season was okay, but it definitely got weaker and weaker as it went on; I tried to watch season 5 and I just can’t; I tried to force myself to watch it but nope, it’s just terrible.

When the first season came out we binged it because it was something new to watch and it seemed okay. The second season lost us in the first couple episodes and that was the end of that.

I don’t think it proves it was written by AI, at this point, I would expect the treat hogs to prefer an AI written show because it would just pander and repeat catchphrases and have no deeper meaning or subtlety. Most likely had a tab open to search for things instead of google, I know a depressingly large number of people who think that asking AI a question gives a “more accurate” response than actually looking for it yourself.
