To those in this thread: if you’re at all curious about how a socialized healthcare system could be developed without waiting for federal-level dems to wave a magic wand, here’s a book for you: Radical Medicine: The International Origins of Socialized Health Care in Canada. Kill the
inside your head that says state-level healthcare is impossible and it needs to be solved at the national level. Canada’s healthcare system started as provincial-level healthcare in Saskatchewan. Every reason you’ve been fed about why it couldn’t work here is contradicted by the actual historical record.
You’re talking about people moving to a state en masse for the socialized healthcare and thus becoming a financial burden on the state?
Nah this is a paralyzing dem talking point for why good things can’t happen. In reality Canada’s healthcare system started out as a provincial-level program in Saskatchewan. This is the entire thesis of federalism, that different levels of government can experiment with programs. Except dems can actually win at some levels of government, so they need to invent a reason why they can’t implement any of the good things they lie about wanting to do.

They’ve gone way past two things being true at once. It’s up to at least five now. Sometimes ten.

Even when he was in office he essentially did not exist. He is whatever is the opposite of a world-historical figure.

If you want an entertaining read about this, October by China Mieville is amazing. iirc (reading it a couple years ago) it revolved around WW1 and the German front; the provisional government kept doing the hideously unpopular business as usual while Lenin was calling for revolutionary defeatism (i.e. “yes, I really am saying that Russia the state should lose this war against Germany the state”). It’s a miracle that after the Bolsheviks took power Petrograd didn’t fall. The Bolsheviks were also trying to put the brakes on taking power for the entire summer, while being urged on by various factions.

Population of Greenland is 56,831 per Wikipedia, so at $100k/person this comes to just under $6B. Good illustration of just how large a billion dollars is. On the other hand for the US this is chump change; pump it up to a million bucks a person and it only becomes $60B. Every other day this country spends that bombing some place or another. Hard to see how Greenlanders would turn down a million bucks a person to become a US territory. Spending the cash also guarantees dems wouldn’t reverse it (not that they would even if it were annexed militarily).

Debate bro reply. Nazism is not an inherent personality trait. People are not born nazis. Vanishingly few people are explicitly nazis.

Nah attraction is more complicated than that. The core values idea is also too static. People change each other over the course of their relationship. I started out thinking the best way to evaluate partners was vibes-based, then took a hard turn to some cold core-values-based analysis, but came back to vibes-based. People are much more than the constellation of beliefs that they hold at a particular time.
The usual objection to this is that if peoples’ core values change then those simply weren’t core values. To which I will reply that we are fundamentally a couple pounds of fat sitting in a dark container of bone. Core values are not things that actually exist within that cavern.

I don’t think Europe ever actually goes to war against the US. US could annex Greenland and Canada and EU leaders would only issue strongly-worded letters. Most that happens is they try to onshore all armaments production. The idea that the US is actually going Germany 1939 mode won’t be entertained unless the US starts launching annexations of the UK or European mainland. USians won’t care. It isn’t as though if the dems regain power they’ll un-annex the territory.
For domestic stuff idk. I went through 2020 like the rest of you. We are in an awful spot with the dems, who can very effectively channel & dissipate revolutionary sentiment. Median lib accepts the Biden years as a failure but views the Obama years as a great success. Although the left is broadly more organized overall compared to then, and most have probably recovered from Gaza encampment burnout. I don’t know if any dem out there actually has the spine to sic state-level law enforcement against the feds, which would be a moment of rupture. Dems are freaks who have wanted to be “in politics” since fifth grade. Could one of them pull a wild stunt on the calculus that people would back them? It totally goes against the sort of incrementalist institutionalist personality cultivated by the party.

idk about that example, it required the mobilization of the entire rest of the industrialized world

Doctor friends are having auto-scribe functionality pushed on them relentlessly. For those not in the know, competent doctors spend some time after your visit (up to half as long as the visit itself perhaps) writing a note summarizing the visit and deciding on course of action. This important process is being turned into slop as doctors at encouraged to use LLMs to generate the note. The time saved of course is rolled into increasing the number of patient visits or other income-producing activities for the hospital.

true but that being said - don’t drink almond milk lol the water usage is astonishing
