You can not divorce the Black Panther’s open carrying weapons from their politics. Educate yourself politically, through joining a party, educate yourself practically by getting yourself trained in the use of a firearm. Then you’ll be prepared for when the time comes to synthesize these two discipline together.

Genuinely people need to stop valorizing gun toting because of the black panthers. The line to hold weapons was pushed by eldridge cleaver who infamously became a republican and started selling pants with a penis attached to them. There was a whole split in the party because the MLs recognized they were alienating black mothers in the community by doing so. Im not saying for people to disarm themselves, and its good to know how to use a gun, but its privileged petty b ideology that thinks the solution to the current crisis is because people arent carrying enough guns.
On the other hand, the main reason how they got the food needed to feed children in the breakfast food program was because they more or less threatened to do an adventurism on small grocers if the small grocers had second thoughts about supporting their local communities with free food.

It’s true, Marx was petty b and the people being armed has no bearing on how ready ICE feels to escalate to shooting people.
There isn’t a solution other than guns. Happy to hear whatever proposal you’ve got but this has been a long, long time coming and we ain’t voting our way out.

Alternatives for people who aren’t mentally in the best place to have a gun?
Seconding first aid. When shit goes down people who know first aid are going to be even more valuable than people who know how to shoot. Both will be necessary but it’s way easier to teach people to shoot guns than to teach people to treat wounds.
Learning to shoot and operate a weapon would be useful even if you don’t a gun. Alternatively getting good at a Balearic sling would be pretty rad. Or first aid.
You should at least learn them, and how they work. If you’re able to take a safety class to understand the basics like how to take a firearm and unload it/disassemble it, do it.
Beyond that, medics are always always always important. Get an IFAK and take classes.

It’s not an alternative, but anyone who carries a gun logically would be carrying OC spray also. The situations where OC is justified to deploy occur much more frequently than situations where it’s justified to shoot someone, and in situations that overlap, there are still advantages for choosing to use OC.
if you have a friend you trust you could have them hang onto a functional part of the weapon so you can still do dry-fire drills.

Dont have immediate access. Keep it in storage and give a friend the key if you can’t just like, have a friend keep it for legal or other reasons. I wouldnt keep a forearm in my house either, learning how to use one is still a good idea. But if you gotta ask a friend for your gun theres a pretty decent safety mechanicism there, not full proof of course but irs not like…in your house

training is part of being comfortable with a gun. People who are worried about CW kinda stuff relating to gun ownership aren’t very likely to do the CW kinda stuff at a range trip with the buddies, at an organized match, or on the protest line.
there’s a lot of 2-story houses in those minneapolis neighborhoods. lots of overwatch angles for somebody with a suppressed rifle to take a shot without being a target for return fire.
