Various tabloid sites report that his net worth was around $60 million when he died, which seems low for his level of fame.

One notable thing about Grateful Dead is that they permitted fans to record concerts and share concert recordings. The lax stance on copyright enforcement was a positive influence on music production.

UC Santa Cruz has an entire area of their library dedicated to every single Grateful Dead original studio and concert recordings, with ones that fans will send in themselves for posterity. It’s honestly one of the most comprehensive well kept public (since the library is open to the public) single band music collections in the world.

Like, I’m not a Deadhead in the slightest, but it is one of the most impressive things I have ever seen.

      $60 million

I googled and I saw that number too. I think it’s effectively copypasta. I don’t believe it. I googled a bit more.

Weir had a net worth of $60 million at the time of his death in January 2026 at the age of 78, according to Celebrity Net Worth.

Maybe the $60m stat is closer than I think. The Dead surely makes a lot from licensing, touring, etc every year but I don’t know how many people are on the gravy train. There might be loads. Wives, ex-wives, children, grandchildren, various hangers on, who knows etc.
