Unless the cartels have advanced anti-aircraft capabilities, I’m pretty sure they aren’t going to have an answer to Trump bombing them, outside of maybe assassinations/terrorism in the US or on US economic infrastructure.

Congress still does care to some extent, because letting the President just do whatever with the budget undermines their own power/authority, and ICE isnt covered under the military budget (yet).

They need money for a massive expansion of ICE beyond what it already is, and only Congress can give them that money currently. That $1.5T proposed military budget isn’t going to just be a bunch of $100M missiles.

My conspiratorial side thinks they are trying to instigate riots, not so they can declare martial law, but so they can justify a massive expansion of ICE into a full-blown SA. They don’t need a justification to do martial law, they already have that power, but a massive expansion of ICE into a federal police force requires money and popular political support, which would have to come from Congress.

Yes, but Venezuela is still heavily reliant on maritime shipping. Most trade between Venezuala and Colombia/Brazil is done via maritime shipping. There’s only one major roadway from Brazil to Venezuela, which is a two lane highway connecting Boa Vista to Guyana City. Colombia only has two major roadways that connect to Venezuala: one crossing in Cucuta and another north of Mariacaibo. It would be a major logistical operation to keep Venezuala supplied via those routes.

Seizing a tanker is still about oil, it’s just seizing infrastructure instead of the commodity itself.

The US would control, or at least have the ability to blockade, both ways in and and out of the Artic Ocean: the Bering Strait and the Greenland-Iceland-UK (GIUK) Gap. It already effectively does control them, given that Denmark let’s the US basically do whatever it’s wants militarily in Greenalnd, which is why I don’t really think this is a about maritime trade routes. To be honest, I think Trump just wants it because it would be larger than the Louisiana Purchase.
