Because I just got a text from some lawyer saying they’ll make my problems go away “starting at” $300 and it’s like WHO HAVE YOU CONSENT TO SOLICIT, I DIDN’T

In the US, motor vehicle agencies legally sell your information and there’s nothing you can do about that if you want to drive

Where I’m at it gets filled into public record, so law firms will often just search the local court records regularly for new tickets to send out mailers or cold calls and texts.

    “starting at” $300

How bad is a speeding ticket that anyone would pay this much for a traffic lawyer? Last time I got one it was like $120 but that was like ten years ago so

Anyway beating a speeding ticket yourself is highly achievable in most jurisdictions (this video is for Canada so seek out info specific to your location)

its not about the money/fine its about the points on your license and whether or not itll ding your insurance premiums.

$300 now to save you thousands in raised insurance costs.

If they could guarantee it’ll go away and IF it would ONLY cost 300 (instead of “starting at”) I would honestly do that because yeah it’s a lot of money but I’m very afraid of crashing out in the middle of a courtroom with some rant about how speeding is a victimless crime and/or the state should have some obligation to do something about the highway (i.e. raise the speed limit to what people are actually driving or improve the road so that the DOT nerd fuckers will do so) other than just have 3 state troopers camp out fining people when literally every fucking body drives way over the speed limit on this particular 8 mile stretch of road (gee i wonder why the cops practically live on it) and then get penalized 10000x more because the judge hates how right I am

The state trooper said I was doing 74 (I think I was doing 67-69 but I wasn’t looking at the speedometer when he pulled me over because I was rehearsing arguments in my head against my parents’ transphobia and not paying attention (to shit like my speedometer) since the road was fucking 100% empty ahead of me) which would make it >15 over the speed limit which means it’s a criminal offense and I could be looking at a month of jail time or a suspended license or some shit which I really don’t want to happen.

My coworker is going through the same shit and they’re making him do fucking community service which I also really do not want to do because I am extremely bothered by how community service to avoid jail is coerced labor. He was going over 30mph over the limit though and idk the road conditions he was on so hopefully I don’t have to deal with the same shit

This is often a law firm contracted with the municipality issuing the ticket. They are essentially the debt collectors, but they will often frame it as helping you resolve the ticket. I think this is mostly a thing with smaller municipalities that derive income from this kind of thing.

It looks like the text I got was from some Kansas based “concierge” service called ticket takedown that matches people up with traffic lawyers in their area, or something like that. It could still be contracted out to the city/county but idk

It’s just kind of like a, what the fuck is this? moment, from the lack of privacy. It’s not like I was ever asked for consent to give out my contact information. This will probably help me find a lawyer because I have no executive function and can’t take care of my life but i’m still bothered by it
